Knowledge and skills framework on containing and controlling antimicrobial resistance
The new Education Framework for Health and Social Care for Antimicrobial stewardship in Scotland : Knowledge and skills framework on containing and controlling antimicrobial resistance was launched in August 2025.
Who is the framework for?
The framework is for everyone working or preparing to work within health and social care in Scotland, who interacts with those in care or their carers, either by being involved in direct care or in a supporting role. It also includes laboratory staff who provide diagnostic expertise and laboratory reports essential for the treatment of infections, and staff in management and organisational oversight roles who can influence and direct the provision of services.
The framework illustrates how staff can contribute in their different roles to keeping antimicrobials safe for future generations, e.g. by preventing infections and following standard infection control precautions (SICPs), promoting vaccination, recognising signs of infections, administering antibiotics correctly and monitoring those receiving them, making sure antimicrobials are taken correctly, not forgotten and disposed of safely, and by communicating with colleagues, those in care and their families/carers.
The framework was developed by NHS Education Scotland in close collaboration with Scottish Antimicrobial Prescribing Group (SAPG) and Glasgow Caledonian University and was supported by a multidisciplinary Short Life Working Group with Scottish antimicrobial specialists and stakeholders from various health and social care settings.
